The Always Shady Umbrella is designed for attaching to a kayak frame and staying in the shade while you're out in the sunny river flats. We created it out of a personal need for shade while fishing in sunny Florida. The universal ball mount is made to attach to your Kayak - recommended directly behind the user - and now we have the option to attach it with a strong adhesive mount instead of the traditional screws. So grab your Umbrella System and your Kayak and get out fishing!
Capt. Rick Murphy recently showcased our umbrella on his show. Watch the clip here and see what he had to say about the Always Shady Umbrella. The below clip (also viewable here) was originally featured on The Chevy Florida Insider Fishing Report. (Skip through to minute mark 2:45 for the feature of Always Shady.)
We are utilizing a relatively new high strength adhesive and primer from 3M – the 1-1/2” Ball Mount that holds up our Umbrella Systems can be virtually “glued” onto any flat surface of a polyethylene kayak!
We apply one side of the 2-1/2” circle of adhesive tape to the bottom of the ball mount at the factory. Then all you need to do is choose a good FLAT surface on your kayak to put the ball mount (we recommend the umbrella system be positioned behind the user).
After “the perfect place” for the mount has been chosen - you'll need to thoroughly clean, rinse, and dry that area. Then (we suggest) using a pencil or tape to trace around the flange of the ball mount where it comes in contact with the kayak. This will give you a 2-1/2” circle, to use as a guide - making it easy to apply primer to only the area where the ball mount will sit.
Make sure your surface is clean and dry, and then using the (included) 3M™ Tape Primer 94 apply a thin, uniform coat to the “circle” that you’ve marked.
To apply: squeeze the middle of the primer pen to release the primer into the dauber at the bottom. The primed surface must remain free from contaminants prior to applying the tape. It's important to use the minimum amount of product necessary as over applying can cause sub-optimal results. Allow the primer to dry completely, which is usually accomplished in 5 minutes at room temperature, then apply the tape.
Special note: porous surfaces may require 2 applications for uniform coverage and good adhesion. Allow your first application of primer to dry before applying a second coat.
After the primer is dry, carefully remove the paper cover from the bottom of the mounting ball. (Note: this adhesive sticks to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING it touches – be very careful!) While holding the middle of the ball mount with both hands – center it directly over the already primed “circle” you’ve marked. Then SLOWLY lower the ball mount down onto the kayak, trying to center it perfectly inside the circle you’ve marked.
Once the ball mount is in place, press down hard all around the edges of the mounting flange – the harder it is pressed down – the better it sticks.
That’s it - you’re done! (According to 3M, you need to wait 24 hours before use for best results.)
KEEP PRIMER PEN AWAY FROM CHILDREN and DISPOSE OF PROPERLY after use.
